Stamattina mi sono alzata, ho preso il treno come tutti i giorni e sonnecchiavo con la stanchezza della settimana sulle spalle (e di un ciclo appena cominciato!).
Sarebbe stata una giornata normalissima, come tante, ma poi il mio capo mi ha girato il discorso tenuto dal Principe Harry il 28 settembre, in occasione del WE Day di Toronto.
Il WE Day è una giornata in cui le grandi voci del nostro tempo intervengono per motivare e ispirare le persone al cambiamento, al recupero di valori come il rispetto, la solidarietà e la tolleranza.
Mentre ascoltavo le parole pronunciate dalla voce (suadente e bellissima, ma forse sono di parte) del Principe Harry, ho sentito che il cuore mi batteva più forte e la mente che si metteva in moto, emozionata.
Harry si è rivolto alle nuove generazioni, alla mia, a quella delle persone che mi circondano, inneggiando alla positività, all'ottimismo, all'unione. Cliché forse, ma anche concetti spesso dimenticati, che cedono il passo alla negatività costante di una generazione cresciuta con la retorica della crisi, del terrore e, peggio ancora, della rassegnazione.
Ecco, vale la pena di ascoltare il discorso del principe Harry anche solo per ricordarci che arrendersi significa perdere. Che smettere di lottare per le proprie idee, perdendosi nelle banalità a portata di scroll significa abbandonare la possibilità di far sentire la propria voce e, soprattutto, di essere una voce differente.
Vale la pena di ascoltare queste parole, perché almeno per un momento nella nostra giornata ci ricordano di quando siamo stati idealisti, di quando volevamo difendere le cose che ci stavano a cuore.

«Siamo più forti quando lavoriamo insieme, siamo più felici quando lavoriamo per gli altri, abbiamo successo quando abbiamo uno scopo nelle nostre vite. Nel mondo di oggi troppe persone si sentono ciniche e apatiche, capisco che le sfide che affrontiamo a volte ci sembrano complesse e perfino spaventose quando non sappiamo a chi rivolgerci per avere delle risposte [...] Ma noi oggi diciamo sì all'ottimismo, sì alla speranza, sì alla fiducia».
«Le migliaia di voi arrivati qui sono la prova che la generazione di oggi è la più connessa, la più piena di energie e la più fiduciosa che il pianeta abbia mai visto. Voi sapete che le differenze di opinione, di circostanza, di razza e di religione sono da rispettare e da celebrare».
«In una cultura fatta di click, sappiamo di non poter perdere tempo prestando attenzione a cose che ci fanno arrabbiare o che sappiamo essere false. Sapete tutti che ci sta apprezzare le cose sui social media, ma è ancor più importante alzare lo sguardo dai nostri telefoni e agire davvero, per difendere ciò in cui crediamo!».

«Hello WE Day. I'm here in Toronto supporting the Invictus Games. This year there are 550.000 competitors from 17 countries taking part. They are proving to the world that great challenges can be confronted with resilience and determination, when you live by the values of service, duty and respect. They are proving that we're stronger when we work together, we are happier when we work in the service of others, we succeed when we have purpose in our lives. In today's world too many people feel cynical and apathetic, I get that the challenges we face sometimes seem complex and even scary especially when we don't know who to turn to for answers. I know that while this generation of young people wants to make our world a better place you often struggle to get your voices heard. I know that you more than any previous generation get deeply about the health and sustainability of the planet you're going to inherit. And I see that you're frustrated that in trenched mindsets are not keeping paced with the urgency of the threat to our environment. But today you are all saying no to pessimism and cynicism. Here in Toronto with both WE Day and Invictus games we are saying yes to optimism, yes to hope and yes to belief. We are putting service and giving back at the heart of everything the we do. The thousands of you got in here are proof that today's generation of young people is the most connected, most energized and most confident the planet has ever known. You know that differences of opinion, of circumstance, of race and religion are to be respected and celebrated. You know, that in a clickbait culture we cannot waste time sharing and drawing attention to things that make us angry or that we know to be false. You all know that is great to like things on social media, but it is more important to look up from our phones to get out into our communities and to take real action, to stand up for what you believe in! So, before I close I want to make a deal with you. The hundreds of service men and women that have got in here for the Invictus games they share your enthusiasm for service and duty. I want you to listen to their stories, if you see them around town introduce yourselves, make some new friends, hear what they and their families have been through, hear how they have overcome incredible challenges and let yourselves be inspired. And if you do that, I promise you that I will work to do everything that I can to support you. To create a platform where your voices can be heard and your ideas taken seriously. Sadly, I'm now part of a slightly older generation, but in the years to come I want to work with you, to help encourage, identify and support the new generation of leadership, both local and global leaders. Today at WE Day you're not surrounded by negativity, you're not fighting on your own, you are working together, you are supporting each other and together you are going to change the world!
